Classic Apple Pie

November 19, 2018

Hello fellow foodies,

Whatever foodie holiday you are celebrating, a classic apple pie is simple and a big crowd pleaser. This apple pie is tart, tasty, and will be a huge winner at any holiday gathering. Don't be afraid to buy a pre-made pie crust if you do not have time to make your own.

Granny smith apples and lemon make it tart. Brown sugar and butter make it oozey with sweetness! Oh and the pear? The pear aides in thickness to the pie.

Classic Apple Pie

Yield: 1 - 9 inch deep dish pie

Oven: 400 degrees F / 350 degrees F

Equipment needed: 1 - 9 inch round deep dish pie pan, measuring cups / spoons, parchment paper lined cookie sheet, large mixing bowl, spatula, chef knife, peeler, cutting board

Ingredients needed:

1 pie crust, here is my recipe for an extra flakey pie crust (Buy pre-made if you don't have extra time)

6 large granny smith apples

1 large bosc pear

1 cup all purpose flour

8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/2 tablespoon ground nutmeg

1/4 cup white sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon fine sea salt

Directions:

  • Roll out pie crust into greased deep dish pie pan. Wrap with plastic wrap. Chill overnight

  • Peel and cut all granny smith apples into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place in large mixing bowl

  • Peel and cut pear into 1/4 inch thick slices. Add to sliced apples in mixing bowl

  • In large mixing bowl, add:

    • 1 cup flour

    • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

    • 1/4 cup white sugar

    • 1/2 cup brown sugar

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla

    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

    • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

    • Toss all until the apples are evenly combined with the ingredients

  • Layer apples into chilled deep dish pie pan.

    • Add: 8 tablespoons cubed butter on top and middle of apples.

  • Roll out remaining pie crust and make a lattice crust for the top.

  • Don't have time, or any more crust, for a lattice? Top it with streusel! Here is my recipe for streusel

  • If you topped with a lattice crust, add egg wash and demerara sugar to make it shiny and pretty

  • Place on parchment lined cookie tray (keeps clean up a breeze!)

  • Bake at 400 degrees F for 25 minutes; Lower heat to 350 degrees F and bake for 35 minutes

  • Let cool. Eat and enjoy!

Happy baking,

Kimm
